Have you ever taken your favorite bedspread or comforter to the dry cleaner for cleaning, but when you get it back, to your horror, you discover that the colors have faded substantially? Unfortunately, fading of bedspreads, comforters, quilts, and other household items is common. It can happen even during the most acceptable cleaning procedures using the manufacturer’s instructions.
In most cases, the surface color has a streaked or frosted appearance. There may also be an overall lightening or complete change of color. Often the fading isn’t noticeable until compared to other matching components in the bedroom ensemble.
When the dyes or pigments applied during manufacturing are not colorfast to dry cleaning solvent, unfortunately, a dry cleaner cannot know whether the dyes will fade during acceptable cleaning procedures.
When you bring a comforter or bedspread for cleaning to View Cleaners, tell your customer service associate that you want it tested for colorfastness before cleaning, regardless of what the care label says.
This testing will also determine which process, laundering or dry cleaning, would be safest for the color and fabric. Sometimes, bedspreads that cannot be dry cleaned can safely be wet cleaned. However, some bedspreads and comforters, especially prints, cannot withstand washing or dry cleaning procedures without fading.
If tests show that the colors may fade, your associate will contact you, and you’ll then need to decide how or if you want the bedspread or comforter cleaned. On the other hand, if the tests show that there’s a good chance the colors will fade and you decide you DO want it cleaned, then we suggest you have any matching components cleaned as well to ensure that the color will be consistent.
Here at View Cleaners, we may also ask you to sign a release so we can proceed with cleaning. But, most of all, you should remember that once a bedspread or comforter has faded, the colors cannot be restored.
If you have questions about having any of your household items cleaned, contact us, and we’ll get them answered.
Unless you recently cleaned your rugs or had them professionally cleaned, there is probably a lot of dirt and germs lurking in your rugs. So here’s a simple cheat sheet showing how to freshen up all your rugs and carpets.
If the rug is machine-woven, sturdy, and does not have a rubber backing, you should be able to machine wash the rug on a gentle cycle and hang it to dry.
Handwash colorfast rugs using a mild detergent and soft brush or sponge. Rinse the rug with water mixed with white vinegar to remove the soap residue. Roll the rug in a clean thick towel to absorb excess water, then hang to dry.
Larger area rugs should be professionally cleaned every one or two years. In between those cleanings, the rug should be vacuumed regularly, and spills and mishaps should be spot cleaned as soon as they happen.
For colorfast rugs, dip a sponge in warm water and, using as little liquid as possible, blot dampened area with a clean, dry cloth (preferably white cotton), blot until the stain has lifted. For non-colorfast rust rugs, use a mixture of 1 part cold water to 3 parts white vinegar, blot until stain lifts, then sprinkle with cornstarch and vacuum 24 hours later.
Remember, wool rugs are exceptionally good at holding and hiding dirt, and that debris can damage the structure of the rug over time. So be sure to save these tips so you can freshen up all your rugs between professional cleaning.

D0 you know how often you need to wash everything in your closet and in your household? Did you know that many garments do not need to be washed after every wearing? In fact, some items will hold up better and withstand the test of time with less frequent washings. That’s why it is so important to wash your clothing, as well as sheets, towels, etc. on the proper schedule. As with any guidelines, some rules are meant to be broken, such as when an item becomes stained or soiled, it would need to be treated for the stain and washed immediately. Below we’ve list a few basic guidelines on how often common garments should be washed.
When washing all items, always read the care label, some items require special cleaning or are dry clean only. Many large household items such as draperies, blankets, comforters, blankets and pillows are also best handled by a professional dry cleaner. Large capacity as well as special drying and washing process help these oversize items maintain their shape and fabric integrity. View Cleaners offers many services see them all.
Who doesn’t love summertime activities? From lazy days on the beach or by the pool, to cookouts and summer festivals, there’s a summer activity for everyone. Along with all the fun comes many little accidents and spills that could ruin your favorite summer clothing. Today we’ve got a few tips on treating common summertime stains, so you can keep your summertime wardrobe looking fresh all season.
Potential Problem: Build-up from deodorant and antiperspirant products can cause fiber damage and yellowing. Blue and green on silk and wool are particularly prone. Aluminum chloride can weaken fibers in cotton, linen, rayon, and some synthetic blends, leaving holes during cleaning.
Clothing Care: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application. Avoid overuse and allow antiperspirant/deodorant to dry before dressing. Soiled garments should be washed or dry cleaned as soon as possible.
Potential Problem: Dyes and oils in suntan/sunblock lotions can stain clothing. This color loss or change may not appear until after you clean your clothes.
Clothing Care: The best way to avoid these stains is by following the directions on the bottle. Always allow the lotions to dry before dressing, and wash your hands before handling clothes.
Potential Problem: Chlorine in pools, spas, and hot tubs can damage spandex used in swimwear.
Clothing Care: Rinse your suit after wearing and follow the care label’s instructions.
Potential Problem: Self-tanners may discolor anything they touch! Light tan, brown, or yellow staining on the cuffs, collar fold, and neckband, and upper button areas, are typical.
Clothing Care: Follow the instructions carefully, wash your hands immediately, and allow your skin time to dry before dressing. If the product gets on your clothes, wash them as soon as possible, as these stains can be difficult to remove.
Potential Problem: Repellents usually will not damage most fibers; however, some products contain alcohol and can cause color loss or color change on fabrics such as acetate and rayon.
Clothing Care: Read the label carefully, especially if applying directly to clothing.
Potential Problem: Fruits like watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries contain tannins and well quickly and easily stain most fibers.
Clothing Care: If possible, immediately rinse the stain from the backside of the stain. If rinsing isn’t an option, blot (do not rub)the stain with a damp cloth to try to lift the stain. Before washing pre-treat with a combination of dishwashing soap and oxygen-based bleach.
Potential Problem: Alcohol may damage silk or acetate and can also disturb dyes. It can also go undetected until after the garment has is laundered.
Clothing Care: Rinse or blot the affected area immediately, then following the care label, launder, or dry clean as soon as possible.
When in doubt, trust all your summertime stains to the professionals like View Cleaners.
Here at View Cleaners, we take stain removal very seriously, and it’s something we do well.
There are numerous reasons why we have a better chance of safely and effectively removing a difficult stain than the average person. Here’s an inside look at how we approach stain removal.
Stain removal is half science and half art, but all timing. The sooner we can begin working on a stained garment, the more likely we will successfully remove the stain. Chemistry, knowledge of fibers, fabrics, and following the least resistance path is our approach to removing stains. The fewer treatments a stain removal specialist needs to apply on a garment, the better. Our specialists have a solid understanding of stains’ characteristics, and attributes, this knowledge, and a set of specialized tools and chemicals are what sets professional spot removal apart.
We have spotting boards where highly trained professionals analyze both the stain and fabric, then using the proper technique slowly and gently remove the spot. This process is particularly useful for gentle fabrics or “dry clean only” items, as this method helps avoid water rings left on the garment.
